Emergency Contraception

If you’re worried your regular contraception has let you down, or you’ve had unprotected sex in the last 120 hours (five days), our Emergency Contraception Service may be suitable for you.

Emergency contraception (“the morning after pill”) is a safe, responsible and effective way of preventing pregnancy. It is important to avail of emergency contraception as soon as possible after unprotected sex as it is only effective for up to 120 hours (5 days) afterwards.

Emergency contraception is available from Flatley’s Pharmacy without prescription after having a short, private consultation with our pharmacist to deem that it is safe for you to take.

If you think you may need emergency contraception, call into Flatley’s Pharmacy and ask for a private consultation with our pharmacist who can advise you on your options.

During the consultation, our pharmacist will ask you a number of questions to determine whether emergency contraception medication is suitable for you.

If it is not suitable, our pharmacist will be able to advise you of other options that are more suitable. If it’s suitable you’ll be given the medication, which only needs to be taken as a single dose. You’ll also be given a Patient Information Leaflet, which you should read carefully.

If you have a Medical Card the Emergency Contraception Service is available free of charge. For other customers, a private fee applies.
